Abstract-ONLINE.COM – South China Morning Post reported on 19 April that China confirmed the signing of the security agreement with the Solomon Islands.
This was done with the aim of promoting peace and stability.
In particular, on April 19, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chinas Wang Wenbin said that the agreement does not target any third party and parallel and complete the working mechanism as well as bilateral and multilateral security in the Archipelago Solomon.
According to Wang, China has promised to help Solomon strengthen capacity building to maintain its own security, by areas of cooperation include maintaining social order, protecting peoples lives and property, providing humanitarian assistance and respond to natural disasters.
However, Wang did not mention details regarding military cooperation, although there is speculation that the agreement will allow the forces Chinas navy, police and armed forces to be stationed there.
Solomon previously said that they would not allow China builds military bases on its territory.
Solomon Islands first said it was in a deal security issues with Beijing in March, sparking concerns from the US and allies such as Australia and New Zealand.
Wangs comments came after Washington warned the deal will destabilize the region and announce it will reopened its embassy in Solomon Islands after it was closed 29 years ago.
In addition, Washington also announced that it would send Mr Kurt Campbell – National Security Council Indo-Pacific affairs coordinator and assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Duong – Mr Daniel Kritenbrink to Solomon Islands this week.
Not only that, Australia – which has a security cooperation relationship with this Pacific island nation – also trying to encourage neighbors away from Beijing.
