BERLIN, KOMPAS.TV German employers and trade unions today Monday (18/4/2022) joins against the EU ban on imports natural gas from Russia. As the Associated Press reported Tuesday, (19/4/2022), the combination of employers and workers sees steps such as it will lead to factory closures, and job losses in huge numbers in the EUs largest economy.
A rapid gas embargo will result in lost production, cessation, deindustrialization and loss of long-term employment long in Germany, says Rainer Dulger, chairman of the group of entrepreneurs BDA, and Reiner Hoffmann, chair of the DGB Confederation of trade unions, in Mondays joint statement on Germanys dpa news agency.
They argue that EU sanctions need to be targeted to give pressure on Russia while minimizing damage to countries who imposed sanctions, by saying in the discussion when this, we dont see that.
The statement came as European leaders discussed possible new energy sanctions on Russian oil, following April 7 decision to ban imports of Russian coal from August.
Ukrainian leaders say revenue from Russias energy exports financed Moscows attacks on Ukraine and must end.
It wont be easy to do. 27 European Union countries get about 40 percent of their natural gas from Russia and about 25 percent of their oil.

Germany, the main manufacturing center and importer of Russian gas, so far refused an immediate closure and said it plans to remove Russian oil by the end of the year and most gas imports Russia in mid-2024.
The EUs executive commission outlines measures to cut Russias gas consumption is up to two thirds by the end of the year with use more piped gas from Norway and Azerbaijan, import more liquefied gas, accelerate the spread of electric power wind and solar and intensify conservation efforts.
