Why Al-Aqsa Mosque is contested by Israel and Palestine, it’s history
JERUSALEM, KOMPAS.COM – The reason why the Al Aqsa mosque was contested by Israel and Palestine can be seen from the history of the site.
The Al Aqsa mosque complex in Jerusalems Old City is a sacred site that very sensitive in both Islam and Judaism.
Quoted from the AFP news agency, an open area of 14 hectares in southeast corner of the Old City captured by Israel during the Six Day War 1967, along with the remnants of later east Jerusalem annexed. The annexation was never recognized internationally.
Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital which does not divided, but Palestine wants the eastern sector as the capital their country in the future.
Known by Muslims as Al-Haram al-Sharif (The Holy Place), the complex is home to the Dome of the Rock and a mosque Al Aqsa.

The reason why the Al Aqsa mosque is important to Muslims, because it is believed to be the place where the Prophet Muhammad performed Isra Mirajs journey to heaven. Therefore, the Al Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in the world Islam after the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophets Mosque in Medina, both in Saudi Arabia.
The contents of the Al Aqsa mosque complex which is still standing today built in the seventh century by the second caliph of Islam, Omar, on the site Second Jewish Temple destroyed by the Romans circa 70 AD.
This complex is also considered the holiest site in Judaism, because housed the First and Second Temples. In Hebrew, it is called as Har HaBayit or the Temple Mount.
